Add Wendigo Totem for life leech and you can facetank most bosses watching the lightning crash. But basically, grab a 2-hander, pump skills into Primal Strike and all its associated skills, and spam that and watch mobs explode.
It pairs well with soldier, inquisitor, arcanist. I also think Primal Strike is fun to play as a beginner - this is a shaman skill, you can use it levelling with any shaman class combination. Pretty much a one-button class, good for getting established and experiencing all content. I find a simple Forcewave soldier really fun to play - pair it with anything you like but in particular a warlord is fun and powerful (+ oathkeeper). You can be a melee or ranged caster if you don't like the pet playstyle.
I like ritualist as a class personally because it feels really diverse. As mentioned, have a look at Maya's guide.
